چکیده

ABSTRACT The growth of magnetohydrodynamic fluctuations relevant to cosmic-ray (CR) confinement in and near their sources, the effects local plasma conditions is revisited. We consider cases where CRs penetrate a medium which may contain fraction neutral particles, explore possible high-order CR anisotropies. An algorithm for calculating dispersion relation arbitrary distributions, anisotropies presented, general solution power-law distributions provided. Implications resulting instabilities strong Galactic sources are discussed. argue that streaming weakly ionized plasmas eliminates need existence an evanescent band relation, conclusion be confirmed by gamma-ray observations. necessity additional multiscale numerical simulations highlighted, as understanding non-linear behaviour crucial.

Microphysics of Cosmic Ray Driven Plasma Instabilities

Energetic nonthermal particles (cosmic rays, CRs) are accelerated in supernova remnants, relativistic jets and other astrophysical objects. The CR energy density is typically comparable with that of the thermal components and magnetic fields. In this review we discuss mechanisms of magnetic field amplification due to instabilities induced by CRs. We derive CR kinetic and magnetohydrodynamic equ...

A cosmic ray current-driven instability in partially ionised media

Context. We investigate the growth of hydromagnetic waves driven by streaming cosmic rays in the precursor environment of a supernova remnant shock. Aims. It is known that transverse waves propagating parallel to the mean magnetic field are unstable to anisotropies in the cosmic ray distribution, and may provide a mechanism to substantially amplify the ambient magnetic field. We quantify the ex...

Non-linear Study of Bell’s Cosmic Ray Current-driven Instability

The cosmic ray current-driven (CRCD) instability, predicted by Bell (2004), consists of non-resonant, growing plasma waves driven by the electric current of cosmic rays (CRs) that stream along the magnetic field ahead of both relativistic and non-relativistic shocks. Combining an analytic, kinetic model with one-, two-, and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we confirm the existenc...

Time Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation

Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

Current-driven instabilities in astrophysical jets

Current-driven instabilities of force-free screw pinches are studied for a large variety of magnetic configurations by means of a global linear analysis in an ideal MHD framework. The magnetic pitch, P = rBz/Bφ, in particular its value on the axis, P0, essentially determines the growth rate of the fastest growing kink instability and allows to identify two regimes. In the large pitch regime, re...
